The Heralds of the Gospel (Portuguese: Arautos do Evangelho) are an international association of the faithful of pontifical right, founded in 1999 by Monsignor Joao Scognamiglio Cla Dias. In March 2026, the documentary "Slaves of Faith" (Portuguese: "Escravos da Fe"; HBO, produced by Endemol Shine Brasil, directed by Marcelo Canellas) presented multiple accusations against the institution.

This encyclopedia responds to each of these accusations with documented facts, based primarily on the book The Commissariat of the Heralds of the Gospel -- Chronicle of Facts 2017-2025, authored by Prof. Dr. Jose Manuel Jiménez Aleixandre (Org.) and Sr. Dr. Juliane Vasconcelos Almeida Campos.

Case summary

Since 2017, the Heralds of the Gospel have been the target of a series of accusations broadcast by the media and, more recently, by the documentary "Slaves of Faith". The accusations range from alleged sexual abuse to financial irregularities, including psychological manipulation, physical punishment, irregular exorcisms, and mistreatment of minors.

The comprehensive survey conducted by Dr. Hugo Cysneiros (legal advisor to the CNBB -- Brazilian Bishops' Conference) in November 2024 identified 28 lawsuits involving the Heralds. Of these, none resulted in a conviction. The majority were dismissed, and the rest were resolved favorably for the Heralds.

Categories of accusations

Sexual Abuse Accusations

Allegations presented in the documentary by Amanda Merotto, Patricia Sampaio, and anonymous testimonies. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith investigated and dismissed the case (pro nunc reponatur). Police inquiries were likewise dismissed. Two key accusers made judicial retractions in Colombia.

Psychological Manipulation

Allegations of brainwashing and mind control. Of the 1,824 people interviewed during the Apostolic Visitation, the overwhelming majority expressed satisfaction with life in the institution.

Punishments and Penalties

Alleged physical punishments and excessive penalties. Inspections by the Ministry of Human Rights, ALESP (Sao Paulo State Legislature), and the Board of Education found no irregularities.

Exorcisms

Allegations of irregular rituals. These were private exorcisms (liberation prayers), which any priest may perform without episcopal license (Canon 1172 refers only to solemn exorcisms). The Judicial Vicar of Braganca Paulista issued a formal opinion: "No illicit act was committed."

The Minors Case

Allegations that children were kept against their families' will. In reality, 2,583 parents signed a petition to the Vatican defending the Heralds. All civil actions regarding minors were dismissed or resolved favorably for the Heralds.

Financial Issues

Allegations of financial irregularities. Independent audits by Deloitte and BDO found no evidence of misappropriation.

The Livia Case

The death of Livia Uchida. The police investigation concluded it was a domestic accident. The inquiry was dismissed.

Weapons and Violence

Allegations of weapons possession and violence. No authority found evidence supporting these accusations.

Ecclesiastical context

The Heralds' case is set within a complex ecclesiastical context involving the Apostolic Visitation of 2017-2018, the subsequent Commissariat (2019-2025), and the controversial actions of Cardinal Joao Braz de Aviz as Prefect of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life.

Judicial outcome

The full report of the 28 lawsuits demonstrates that, after eight years of investigations across multiple jurisdictions (Public Prosecutors in SP, RJ, PR, MG; Public Defender's Office; ALESP; Ministry of Human Rights; Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith), there was not a single conviction. The overwhelming majority of cases were dismissed for lack of evidence or found to be unfounded.
